While “one-car garage” sounds like a standardized term, the actual usable space can vary significantly. A few feet of difference in width or depth can mean the difference between comfortably unloading groceries and having to squeeze out of a barely open door.

There is no single law that dictates exactly how big a steel garage must be, but construction standards have established common sizes over the years. Generally, the dimensions fall into three categories: minimum, average, and spacious.
The Minimum Size: 12’ x 20’
This is the smallest size you will typically encounter, often found in older homes or dense urban developments. A 12-foot width by 20-foot depth (240 square feet) is technically enough to house a compact sedan. However, it leaves very little margin for error. Opening car doors will be difficult, and you will have almost no room for storage shelves or workbenches.
The Average Size: 14’ x 22’
This footprint offers a much more comfortable experience. The extra two feet in width allow you to open car doors without hitting the wall, and the extra depth accommodates longer vehicles like minivans or small trucks. You also gain a small amount of perimeter space for hanging tools or stacking bins.
The Spacious Option: 16’ x 24’
If you are building from scratch, this is often the recommended size. At 16 feet wide, you have ample room to walk around the vehicle on both sides. The 24-foot depth allows for a full workbench or deep storage shelves at the back of the bay. This size effectively future-proofs your home for larger vehicles.
Critical Factors That Influence Size Requirements
Sticking to the bare minimum might save money on construction costs, but it often leads to frustration down the road. Several factors should influence your final decision on garage size.
Vehicle Size
This is the most obvious variable, yet many people overlook it. A Honda Civic is roughly 15 feet long, while a heavy-duty pickup truck can exceed 22 feet. If you own a large truck or SUV, a standard 20-foot deep garage simply won’t work. You need to measure your current vehicle and consider what you might drive in the future.
Storage and Utility
Garages rarely serve only as parking spots. They are often the designated home for:
